Where craftsmanship meets creativity

About us

Hi! I'm Zack Thompson, Head Craftsman at Furniture City Customs. From a young age, I preferred working with my hands and creating things over screen time—choosing Lincoln Logs and Legos as my go-to activities. After a rewarding career as a sales leader in the technology sector, I founded Furniture City Customs, driven by the belief that life is most fulfilling when we are mindful of our spaces and the impact they have on us. While furniture is not the only component of a great space, we believe it is foundational.
Whether you need a home office that energizes and boosts your productivity, or you're an architect or designer crafting an inviting living space for clients to entertain, we're here to help you envision and realize that dream.

We handcraft each piece to meet the unique specifications and desires of our clients, using responsibly and ethically sourced materials in our Grand Rapids, Michigan (Furniture City USA!) studio. Expect nothing less than white-glove service from start to finish.

Let’s build something special together!

Every detail is important

We understand the profound impact that a well-designed space can have on mental health and well-being. Our furniture is thoughtfully crafted to contribute positively to this harmony.

Our Process

Space Evaluation

The first step will typically be either a virtual or in-person meeting to evaluate your space and get an idea of what you are trying to accomplish. From there, we’ll brainstorm ideas on how to get there with furniture.

If you already have a design in mind or are working with a designer, we are happy follow your lead!

Design Consultation

After the evaluation, our team will put together some options and sketches or renderings where possible. We’ll work through modifications and fine tune the plan to fit your needs. Once we’ve checked all the design boxes, we’ll send you an estimate or a quote.

Procuring the Right Materials

We work with a network of suppliers all across West Michigan, many of which are small businesses just like us, but we also have relationships with large distributors and manufacturers so we can source materials quickly and efficiently

Most of our lumber comes from sustainably managed forests in and around Michigan. We love to reclaim materials from trees felled by natural events.

We vet our sawyers carefully and ensure lumber is dried and stored properly before we bring it into our shop. Materials then acclimate to conditions in our shop before we begin using them, which can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on environmental conditions like temperature and humidity. This practice greatly reduces risks like shrinkage and other distortions that can damage your furniture and ultimately render it unusable.

Construction and Finishing

Once materials are acclimated to our shop and fully stable, we’ll begin construction according to your design. We love to keep our clients updated with photos and videos throughout the process, but if you’d rather not see the play byplay, that’s perfectly fine too! Construction and finishing times vary by project; we’ll provide an estimate before we begin and keep you apprised of any adjustments.

We offer a range of finishes to suit the type and usage of the pieces we craft, from food-safe, natural waxes and oils to lacquers and varnishes to paints and stains.

Installation and Delivery

Our team will deliver finished pieces within 50 miles of Grand Rapids. We can deliver beyond this range for an additional fee. We can also work with you to ship pieces if preferred.

For built-ins, cabinetry, or other pieces that require installation, we will provide you options with and without the cost of installation services.

That’s it! We’ll provide white glove service from the first consultation to the delivery of your newest favorite pieces of furniture!

If you're seeking something truly bespoke and one-of-a-kind, you've come to the right place.

Although this is well intentioned and the goal certainly is to reduce the quantity of these bothersome thoughts, the technique is inherently flawed. Requiring the individual to remember what not to think of infers that they have already thought it. It is akin to telling them to not think of a blue banana.
